Meatless Mondays

Simmi heifer and calfBefore you send me "nastygrams" and ugly comments, let me say that we have a small ranch and we come from a long line of farmers and cowboys. I am not saying to go meatless. However, one day a week can make a huge difference.

  • It takes 464 gallons of water to produce one serving of beef, 180 for pork and 130 for chicken.
  • It takes 43 gallons for eggs, 21 gallons for bread and 6 gallons for broccoli.
For every burger skipped:
  • You can save enough water to drink for the next 3 years.
  • You can save enough water to shower for the next 2.5 months.
  • You can save enough energy to charge your iPhone for 4.5 years.

Meaty Risks:
  • The risk of dying during a 28 year study was roughly 37% higher in men who ate about 2 servings of red meat a day than in those who ate about 2 servings a week.
  • If you are like me, I like my meat well done. Heterocyclic amines are formed when proteins are heated at high temperatures,e specially when meat starts to char and burn a bit. They are also carcinogenic in animals.
  • So, is eating less meat the best way to prevent cancer? Not smoking is still the most (?) thing you can do to avoid cancer. Avoiding being overweight or obese has emerged as the second most important. Red meat is less important, except that statistically it contributes to being overweight.
  • In the U.S., about 45% of the grain we grow is fed to animals, about 39% is for ethanol and another 15-20% is used to produce high fructose corn syrup and another manufactured foods, and only about 10% of the grain is actually consumed by humans.
